How runes are found

There are two ways to find a rune.

By discovery. The first time you ever visit a system with a rare star, there is a 2% chance of finding one of that star's runes. It has to be your first visit to that system: returning later never rolls again.

By following someone else's find. When a player finds a rune, the system is marked and a message goes out to the whole galaxy naming the player, the rune and the coordinates. For the next 4 hours that system hands out that exact rune to anyone who travels there, with no chance roll involved, as long as they do not already have it.

This means a rune announcement is an open invitation. If you are missing the rune that was just found, travelling to those coordinates within the window is a guaranteed pickup, and it does not matter whether you have visited that system before.

After 4 hours the marker expires and the system goes back to normal.

TL;DR:

  • Explore new systems with rare stars to roll for runes yourself.
  • Watch the announcements: a freshly found rune is guaranteed to anyone who reaches that system within 4 hours.
  • You can only find each rune once, so check what you are missing before chasing an announcement.
